Sonia Nimr és una destacada autora palestina que escriu històries contemporànies amb elements folklòrics per a lectors de totes les edats. El seu avi, Saïd Nimr, fou un pioner de la medicina a Palestina i l’oncle, Essam Nimr, va participar en el primer allunatge amb la nau Apol·lo. La mare, que des de petita l’animava a llegir relats, fou qui la va engrescar a dedicar-se als contes infantils.

The British promised Hussein bin Ali an independent Arab state in exchange for help fighting the Ottomans in WWI. However, the British secretly agreed with the French to divide the territory in the Sykes-Picot Agreement. The Treaty of Sev divided the territory accordingly, with France occupying Syria and Britain occupying Palestine.

World War I and its aftermath shaped present-day Middle East geopolitical conflicts. The British Empire made contradictory promises to Arabs, Jews, and the French over how Ottoman territory would be divided after the war, leading to many fights today.
In the letter, Kanafani is writing to his friend Mustafa, who has moved to Sacramento for a teaching position. The two men had always hoped to leave Gaza together and seek life elsewhere, but after his most recent visit home—during which he finds his young niece Naida violently injured—Kanafani’s views have changed. Gaza was brand new, Mustafa! he says, You and I never saw it like this.
